Beachmere is a low-lying coastal village on Deception Bay, tidal creeks on two sides, sandy ground underfoot and a lot of retirees who have been here long enough to know exactly where the water goes. Retaining walls here are rarely tall. They are garden edges, a step up to a level lawn, a sand bank held back from a path, or a low wall squaring off a yard that would otherwise drift. What they are is specific, because sand and salt air both behave differently to the clay and the still air a few kilometres inland.
We connect you with experienced, insured local builders who work Beachmere and build for sand rather than against it.
Sand is the whole problem
Clay holds itself together. Sand does not. Fine sand will wash straight out through the gaps between sleepers, through weep holes and through any drainage layer that has not been wrapped properly, and once it starts you get voids behind the wall, a hollow sound underfoot and a slumping garden bed with no obvious cause.
The answer is geotextile fabric, correctly lapped, between the soil and the drainage aggregate across the full back of the wall. It lets water through and holds the fines back. On a sandy Beachmere block it is not an upgrade, it is the thing that makes the wall work. Our retaining wall drainage page explains how the layers go together.
Salt air and what it eats
Coastal air is hard on steel. Posts, brackets, screws and reinforcement all corrode faster here, and a fixing that would last decades inland can rust out in a fraction of that. Ask specifically what grade of galvanising or stainless is being used on anything metal, and how posts are protected where they enter the ground.
Concrete sleeper walls remain a sound choice when the steel is specified for a coastal site. For low garden work, timber retaining walls are economical and easy to replace later. Sandstone retaining walls suit the coastal look and drain freely, which is a genuine advantage in sand.
Low ground and flood awareness
A lot of Beachmere sits low, and residents plan around it. A wall changes where water sits and where it runs, so it is worth raising with the builder and with City of Moreton Bay if your block is flood aware. Building a wall that blocks a flow path helps nobody.
Frequently asked questions
Why did sand wash out of my existing wall?
Almost always because there is no fabric behind it, or the fabric was not lapped and has opened up. It can sometimes be retrofitted by excavating behind in sections.
Are low coastal walls still regulated?
They can be. Councils and the QBCC set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Queensland, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting.
Is timber a bad idea near the water?
Not for low garden work, as long as the fixings are specified for coastal conditions. See the retaining wall cost guide for how the materials compare.
