Deception Bay is really two suburbs sharing one postcode. Down toward the water you have the 1970s and 80s stock that gave the suburb its reputation for affordable housing, sitting on flat sandy ground barely above the bay. Back from the foreshore, the newer estates on the inland edge toward Burpengary East were cut into country that actually has some fall in it. Low walls on the sandy flats
Most of the older streets never needed a tall wall and still do not. What they need is a low wall that holds a garden bed, squares up a driveway edge, or lifts a usable level out of ground that stays wet for days after a storm. Modest jobs, and the ones built badly most often, because everyone assumes a low wall is forgiving.
Sand is not forgiving in the way people expect. It drains beautifully, which sounds like the problem solving itself, but water moving through sand carries the sand with it. Fines wash out through the gaps between sleepers, the ground behind slumps, and a wall that was never under real pressure quietly loses the soil it was built to hold. The estate edge is a different job
On the inland side the newer blocks were benched much like the growth corridor further north, and those walls are structural. Boundary walls between two pads, fill held behind a driveway, a wall carrying the surcharge of a shed slab above it. Concrete sleeper walls are the usual answer there, with steel posts in deep piers, and the engineering is not optional.
Thirty years of salt air on the original walls
Plenty of first-generation walls here are besser block or hardwood sleepers put in by the owner on a weekend. Timber at that age is often spongy right at ground level even when the face looks sound, and old block walls close to the bay show rust staining where the steel inside has started to go. Start with retaining wall repairs if the wall is still standing straight.

Does a low wall in sand still need drainage?
Yes, though for a different reason than a clay block. The job is less about releasing trapped water and more about stopping the sand escaping with it, so fabric and correct backfill matter more than sheer wall strength.
Why does the ground behind my wall keep sinking?
Almost always sand migration. Material is washing out through the gaps or around the footing and the surface above drops to fill the void. Patching the top does nothing until the escape route is closed.
Are the inland estate walls really different?
Yes. Those hold a designed cut or fill, so height, surcharge and footing depth all come into it. The builder assessing your block will say which situation you are in before pricing anything.
