Rothwell sits in the gap, between Deception Bay on one side and the peninsula proper on the other, with the main road running through the middle of it. Postcode 4022 covers Rothwell and nothing else, which is unusual around here and handy when you are trying to work out whether a quote is actually local. The housing is mixed: older places that have been here since well before the newer pockets went in, and streets of much more recent homes behind them. The ground is flat to gently sloping, so the retaining work is rarely dramatic, and that is exactly why so much of it gets underdone.
We connect you with experienced local builders who cover Rothwell and quote what the block in front of them needs.
Gentle slope is still slope
A fall of half a metre across a backyard does not look like a retaining problem until you want a flat lawn, a level shed pad, or a pool that is not sitting in a dish. Then it becomes one. The walls that come out of those jobs are low, long and easy to get wrong, because a long low wall has a lot of surface area collecting water behind it and not much mass resisting the push.
Rothwell ground is a transition zone between the sand nearer the bay and firmer material further in, and that matters for footings. Two blocks in the same street can behave differently. A builder worth having will dig before committing to post depths rather than applying the same detail everywhere.
What most Rothwell jobs are
Driveway edges where the crossover has to meet a yard sitting higher or lower. Garden terracing along a side boundary that is too narrow to batter. Levelling a rear yard so a shed or a deck has something square to sit on. Boundary walls between two houses built at different times to different levels, which is common here given how the suburb filled in.
For low garden work, timber retaining walls still price well and look right against older homes. Once a wall is holding a driveway, a pool surround or anything structural, concrete sleeper walls are the sensible step up. Our retaining wall cost guide explains what actually moves the price between the two.
Councils and the QBCC set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Queensland, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting.
Frequently asked questions
My wall is only knee high. Does it need drainage?
It needs it more than people think. Low walls fail from water and washout just as readily as tall ones, they simply fail less spectacularly. Fabric, free draining backfill and somewhere for water to go are cheap at build time and expensive to retrofit.
Can I just build up the soil instead of retaining?
Sometimes, if there is room to batter the ground back at a gentle angle and you are happy to lose the space. On a standard Rothwell block there usually is not room, which is why the wall wins.
Who is responsible for a wall on the boundary?
It depends on which block the wall is holding and what was agreed when it went in. Get it assessed first so both households are working from the same facts, then approach City of Moreton Bay if you cannot settle it between you.
