Eatons Hill earned its name. The 1990s and 2000s homes here are large, often split-level, and sitting on blocks with real fall from front to back. Pools are common, and on a sloping block a pool almost always means retaining, because the only way to get a level pool surround is to cut into the hill or build the ground up and hold it. That combination of slope, size and pools makes Eatons Hill engineered-wall country.
We connect you with experienced local builders who take on the engineered work these blocks need.
Pool surrounds and what sits above them
A pool-surround wall is not a garden wall. It may be holding soil against a pool shell, holding a paved surround above a lower yard, or doing both. Water, paving and sometimes a shell full of several tonnes of water are all part of the load picture, and pool fencing adds another set of requirements on top.
These walls get designed. A builder who quotes a pool-surround wall off a photo without talking about engineering is not the one to use. Councils and the QBCC set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Queensland, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting.
Driveways and split-level blocks
The other heavy Eatons Hill wall is the driveway cut. Getting a car from a street down or up to a garage on a split-level house means a significant cut, and the wall holding it carries vehicle surcharge right at the top. Same story as the pool walls: engineered, properly drained, built with footings that suit the soil classification.
Split-level homes also tend to have walls tucked hard against the house itself, which brings footing proximity into the design. An engineer needs to know what the wall is near as well as how tall it is.
Materials for engineered work
Concrete sleeper walls with steel posts in deep piers handle most of it and suit the reactive clay through this country. For the tallest work and anything carrying a structure, block retaining walls give the engineer more to work with. Drainage is non-negotiable on every one of them, and our retaining wall drainage page explains why saturated backfill, not soil weight, is what usually fails a wall here.
In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 generally requires a QBCC licensed contractor, which covers essentially all work of this type.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a pool in above an existing wall?
Only if the wall was designed for it, and most were not. Have the existing wall assessed before the pool is designed, because retrofitting is far more expensive than allowing for it up front.
Why are quotes here higher than nearby suburbs?
Height, surcharge, engineering and access on steep ground. The retaining wall cost guide sets out each driver.
My wall is cracking near the pool. Is that urgent?
Treat it as urgent. Movement near a pool shell can become an expensive problem quickly. See leaning or collapsed wall.
