Kallangur is two suburbs sharing a postcode. Along the main road and the older side streets you have 1970s and 80s brick and fibro houses on generous blocks, many of them still with the walls the original owners built themselves. Behind and between those streets, big lots are being split and benched for new infill housing, and brand new walls are going up on ground that has just been cut for the first time.

We connect you with experienced local builders who work both sides of Kallangur.

Owner-built walls from the 1970s and 80s

The older Kallangur wall is usually one of two things. Treated pine sleepers behind round posts, or dry-stacked besser block with no core fill and no steel. Both were perfectly normal at the time and plenty of them are still standing. The ones that are not standing straight tend to give the same warning signs: posts rotted at ground line, blocks tilting out at the top, soil and mulch spilling through the joints after rain.

A besser wall with no steel in it cannot be straightened. It has to be taken down and rebuilt, usually in block retaining walls with core fill and reinforcement, or in concrete sleeper walls if the look suits. A timber wall with sound posts can sometimes have sleepers replaced in place.

New walls on split blocks

The subdivision work is a different job entirely. Here the wall is part of making two usable pads out of one old block, and it usually has to be in place before a slab goes down. Levels, boundary setbacks and what sits above the wall all feed into the design, and the engineering is not optional on a new benched lot.

Councils and the QBCC set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Queensland, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting. In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 generally requires a QBCC licensed contractor.

Picking the right system

On an old block with an established garden, matching what is already there often makes sense. On a fresh benched lot, the engineer's soil classification drives the choice more than looks do. Reactive clay through this country rewards steel posts in deep piers and punishes shallow footings. Where the wall is a low garden terrace well away from the house, timber retaining walls are still good value.

Frequently asked questions

My besser wall is leaning but has not fallen. Is it urgent?

Treat it as urgent. Unreinforced block gives very little warning between leaning and letting go. Read leaning or collapsed wall and get someone to look at it.

Can I rebuild a wall my parents built without drawings?

Yes. The builder measures the site and the engineer designs from what is there. Original drawings are a bonus, not a requirement.

Does a subdivision wall cost more than a backyard wall?

Usually, because it is taller, engineered and often needs to be certified before building work proceeds. The retaining wall cost guide explains the drivers.
