Woody Point is the oldest part of the peninsula and the walls prove it. Up behind the jetty there are blocks with genuine fall to them, bay views earned by being higher than everything around, and terracing that has been reworked by three or four generations of owners. You will find hand-laid stone, early besser block, hardwood sleepers from several different eras, and quite often all of them in the same backyard at different levels. Almost none of it has a drawing or a date attached.
We connect you with experienced local builders who work Woody Point and are comfortable assessing walls nobody has records for.
Working out what you have
The first job on an old Woody Point wall is understanding it. Is the stone wall a true retaining structure or a facing in front of something else. Does the besser have steel and grout in the cores or is it dry stacked. Is the timber holding the slope or has the slope quietly settled into a shape that holds itself. Those answers change the recommendation completely, and they cannot be given from a photograph.
Where a wall has moved, the sequence matters. Fix the water first, then the structure, then the face. Doing it the other way around is why so many old walls here have been repaired twice. Start with leaning or collapsed wall if yours has shifted, or retaining wall repairs if it is still true.
Real slope means real engineering
Unlike most of the peninsula, parts of Woody Point have enough grade that a wall is carrying a serious wedge of soil, sometimes with a house or a driveway above it. That puts these jobs in a different category from the low garden walls at Clontarf or Margate. Height, surcharge and footing depth all need to be worked out properly rather than matched to whatever the neighbour did.
Keeping the character
Plenty of owners here want the replacement to look like it belongs. Sandstone retaining walls sit well against the older homes and the existing stonework, while rendered or faced block work suits a job where strength is the priority and the finish can be dressed later. Both cost more than a plain sleeper wall, and a builder should say so up front rather than after the deposit.
Councils and the QBCC set height and engineering thresholds for retaining walls in Queensland, and the builders we work with confirm what your wall needs before quoting. In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 generally requires a QBCC licensed contractor.
Frequently asked questions
Can an old stone wall be saved rather than replaced?
Often, yes, particularly where the stone itself is sound and the problem is water or a failed section. Rebuilding a part of a wall using the existing stone is common work here.
There are no records for our wall. Is that a problem?
Not for assessing it. A builder reads the wall itself, digs where needed and reports what is there. Records only become relevant if the wall is being rebuilt to a new specification.
Our wall holds up the driveway. How urgent is a lean?
Treat it as urgent. A wall carrying vehicle load has far less margin than a garden wall, and movement at the top usually means something behind it has already given way.
